The 2020 Experience

Matt Tanner on December 7, 2020

As we reach the end of 2020 and the holidays are coming up, I thought I would give my take on experiences.

Chris and I enjoy giving experiences as gifts much more than physical things that are soon forgotten. We took our entire family (15 of us!) to Aruba in 2012. Before we even left Indianapolis the adventure was starting as we were held up in security and they closed the door at our gate. With half of the family on the plane and half at the gate desk, the attendant called the pilot and he allowed them to open the doors to let us in!

Aruba is beautiful. Always sunny and warm, always windy. There are tons of excursions to do exploring the island and on this trip, Chris and I wanted to see it all with as many of the family members as possible.

During the trip, several got the stomach flu and were in the hotel for a few days. Personally, I remember missing out on the Off Road 4×4 Adventure while taking care of my son. Others missed a day of mountain biking or snorkeling because they were miserable in their room.

Feelings: Trapped. Out of control. Unknown. When will this please end?
Reality: Journey. Adventure. Excitement. When will this have to end?

At the end of the trip, we all had shared experiences and personal experiences. Each person on the trip probably took away different memories and feelings, but I hope the trip as a whole brings a smile to their face when they think back.

2020 has been a wild year. We lost loved ones. Political and racial tension. Sports died. Virtual everything. Feelings and reality are just like our family trip to Aruba. Look for the positive in your 2020 Experience. They are in there, it’s all about perception and reflection.
