Rider Profile: Spencer Miller

Matt Tanner on March 19, 2018

Meet our Rollfast Cycling Club member, Spencer Miller. You may recognize him as he was featured on the local Indianapolis news a few months ago for his youth cycling passion as well as his recipes business. Learn more about Spencer and what else he’s planning for 2018.

What are your goals for 2018?

One of Spencer’s main goals for the 2018 season is to earn his Cat 1 upgrade. Moving from Cat. 2 to Cat. 1 requires 30 points in a 12-month period. Once you’re looking to upgrade to Cat. 2, sanctioned stage races can earn you points. He also wants to get as many race days as possible and get to events that best suit his skills. He will start with Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, Arkansas in mid-April. He will guest ride for Primal – Audi Denver https://www.facebook.com/primalmensracing/ at Joe Martin in the Elite 1/2 field with 4 days of racing. Immediately following Joe Martin, Spencer will take part in another big stage race, Tour of the Gila. This race takes place in Silver City, New Mexico and will be a 5-day race. Throughout his racing adventures this Spring, he aspires  to make connections in hopes of finding a team to ride for next season.

What is your training regime – bike work, nutrition?

Right now, Spencer is building up his fitness for some races coming in the next couple of months. He had the opportunity to escape the cold  Midwest weather and head out to California to stay with relatives for a few weeks. Spencer works hard on the bike almost every day, but part of being successful on the bike is also doing work off the bike. Right now, his coach has him in the gym doing strength work 2-3 days a week and core work 3-4 days a week. As far as nutrition goes, there is no denying he loves his sweets, so through his MacroChef blog he makes healthier protein-based desserts. In addition to the desserts, Spencer tries to eat as healthy as possible, and he eats a lot!

How do you engage your coach and make improvements from being coached?

Spencer is coached by Benjamin Sharp. He has been coached by Benjamin for about a year and a half now and is really enjoying it. He has gotten stronger in every aspect of his cycling and really improved his weaknesses. Spencer and his coach talk quite often to make sure training is going as planned and for Spencer to give updates on how he is feeling. Benjamin gives Spencer workouts through TrainingPeaks. Spencer then uploads his rides to the site and can leave comments, as well as his coach can see his training results, analyze them and leave him notes and suggestions.

What’s next with your MacroChef endeavour?

In addition to travelling and training, Spencer has been working hard on developing some new recipes. He has made a business out of creating healthier, protein-based recipes for supplement and nutrition companies. Soon, he will be coming out with his first recipe book. It will focus on delicious, indulgent desserts that you can feel good about because they are made healthier with the best all-natural ingredients. You definitely won’t want to miss it if you are looking to eat healthier this year but also want to be able to enjoy things like desserts! You can check out his blog, www.macro-chef.com, or his Instagram (@macro_chef).
